The aim of this article is to give you a strategy from which you can build a successful self-publishing career or build an online presence to sell more books.
The digital revolution has made self-publishing a realistic option for any writer. In this blog post I have used the ideas of three publishing experts (Michael Hyatt, Seth Godin and Chris Brogan) to illustrate the changes in the industry and provide realistic guidelines as to how you can successfully publish your own books or build an online platform.
Seth Godin And A New Way To Publish
In the first audio feature, Seth Godin explains how the publishing industry has changed and what this means for the future of self-publishing. Though this audio is directed at traditional publishers, its lessons apply equally well to self-publishers. In essence Godin sets out a publishing model that sees content producers (be that traditional publishers or self-publishers) creating books that will be read. In essence his message is to find books for your readers, not readers for your books.

Michael Hyatt And Why A Platform Is So Important
This video sees CEO of Thomas Nelson, Michael Hyatt, being interviewed at the Rise To The Top website. Hyatt is a traditional publisher and shares his views on the way he is integrating his company’s vision with changes in digital publishing. He offers much advice and guidance that can be implemented by self-publishing writers. Hyatt explains that the biggest problem you face as a writer is making yourself heard. He suggests that you should be embracing social media as a way to build your voice and emerge from the noise. He also makes an important point in that writers looking to follow the traditional publishing route need to develop an online platform in order to have the maximum appeal to publishers.
Chris Brogan And A Blueprint For Building An Online Platform
This final video expands on the message from Hyatt and offers practical and pragmatic guidance to building an online platform. Social media guru Chris Brogan is an evangelist of the ‘hub’ method which sees a central blog being linked to outlying social media channels such as Twitter and Facebook. If you are serious about building a platform, then this video will give you all the steps you will need to lift yourself above the noise and find books for your readers.
I would be interested to hear your take-aways from these three presentations…
