Are You An Independent Writer?

I read a blog post last week (I know I can’t remember where! Sorry.) That used the phrase Independent Author and it got me thinking.

As little as a few years ago Self-Published writers carried a reputation as failed wannabes, who turned to paying for their books to be published as a last grasp option of success as a writer.

Yet this imagery is now out-dated. The development of the internet as a marketing tool and the expansion of social media, together with advances in printing and publishing technology, has made self-publishing a realistic option for many writers.

These new breed of Proactive Writers, don’t deserve to carry the negative baggage of old thinking. So I have come to the conclusion that the phrase Self-Published Writer has had its day.

SO from this point onwards, I will refer to all self-motivated, self-promoted, self-marketing, self-funding, self-published writers as Independent Authors.

Independent Author has a better sound to it! Agree that old negative baggage has to be thrown away for shiny new suitcase. :)

I feel that the goals and professionalism of many self-published writers is far beyond that shown even five years ago. It seems only fair that we address this and call them independent writers.

I always thought it would only be a matter of time before self-publication lost its stigma. Okay so it took about a decade, but so what. No doubt the global recession also helped a bit. I agree with Marisa about the term being better :)

Yes…. Independent Authors. The stigma is gone!

Given the insane exposure and revenue potential of independent authoring (not to mention the nous required) you might reasonably expect non-independent authors to be bereft of the glory before too long…
