Free Software To Allow You To Write Without Distraction

I don’t know about you but I finding switching off and just getting down to writing very tough!

However, in recent years a number of software tools have appeared to help writers write with little or no distractions.

Here’s a list of some of my favourites.

  • 1. Q10 – Free, Windows based software. This simple text editor will provide you with a full screen writing environment free from distractions.
  • 2. WriteRoom – Free, Mac (or iPhone) based software. Again a simple text editor that will provide you with a full screen writing environment free from distractions.
  • 3. Ommwriter – Free, Mac based software. This is the new boy on the block. The layout is designed to create a relaxing and distraction free writing environment.

Anyone else recommend distraction free writing software?

MS Word can go full screen, also. Think the shortcut key is F12.

Sometimes unplugging the network connection works pretty good, too.

Scrivener (http://www.literatureandlatte.com/scrivener.html), which is already my favorite text creation tool, offers a full-screen mode as well.

If I’m procrastinating I’ll use Write or Die (http://writeordie.drwicked.com/). A timed or word-count based free web app or $10 download. If you stop writing for a user-set period of time, bad things happen…

I’m testing some apps to make notes on an iPad and Simplenote is a no-distraction tool here. You can also write from a computer: https://simple-note.appspot.com/index.html. The good thing is that the files can be accessed from dfferent devices. You can say, hey Google Docs does this. No it doesn’t, on an iPad your docs can be only viewed, not edited – and that’s a pity.
I’m also using Evernote (from a computer, iPhone and iPad) – and it crushes every second time, so it’s distracting like hell, and frustrating as well.

Don’t know why you would use a web site when Notational Velocity syncs perfectly.

This is a great article! I also recommend “StopDistractions” for Windows users. It helps me concentrate all the time, and it’s only $5!
