How Writers Can Use Stumble Upon To Build Traffic

Let’s face it, we are all looking for more traffic to our blogs.

One method of building traffic is to use Stumble Upon.

I have used this for a number of years and the service regularly brings traffic to this blog. The basic premise is that people using Stumble install a tool bar, highlight the topics they like (e.g. writing) and hit the stumble button. They are then taken to pages that have been identified as potentially interesting. Readers rate these pages, which means only the best material ‘floats’.

Below are a couple of videos that will explain in more detail:

Things I have learned about using Stumble to attract traffic

  • Stumble is a cruel mistress, some days she gifts you with thousands of new visitors, other days nothing,
  • Making friends is the key. Stumble allows you to befriend people and then thumb up articles they send your way. They will often thumb up articles you send in return. This can be an effective way of promoting your own work.
  • Stumbling your own material is not as powerful as letting others stumble your work.
  • If you are going to Stumble your work use su.pr it seems to bring more traffic.
  • Be free with your own finds. If you come across a site you love, then add it to the Stumble database. This fits nicely with the ethos of the service.
  • Stumble visitors are transitory, though some will stick around if your RSS feed is clear for all to see.

I’ve tried SU a fair bit but just can’t seem to get into the habit of using it on a regular basis. I also struggled to work out how to ‘friend’ people, but then being in the business of developing usable websites I get frustrated pretty easily.

All that said, Write for Your Life and Websites for writers have both seen huge spikes in traffic from SU, so I am indeed very thankful for that. I shall endeavour to investigate more thoroughly!

I suspect your traffic spikes come from me adding you to SU. I add all the sites I tweet about to Stumble, seems a fair exchange.

        Quite possibly – so thanks!

I still remember that fateful day when one of my posts spent at least 20 minutes on the delicious homepage. Very exciting.

    Thank you for this!
I have yet to learn the mysteries of getting traffic to my blog, in spite of using Stumble and Digg on several occasions.
Do you use it for a certain amount of time every day?
Is Stumble the only one you use or do you use others equally?

Digg is a mystery to all and I have never really had any traffic from the system. The key with stumble is to engage with the community. Being able to send messages when you share is a very powerful tool.

OH! I’ve been treating it as a tool as opposed to a community. I will look into it, but is there a recommended way of engaging? Is it similar to twitter or not as personal as that? I’ve actually gotten to know people through Twitter, how I found you!

The best way to engage on Stumble is to share pages and then include a short message. Write a message for each share. Also reply to messages.
